AWS Rekognition — one video, two approaches, two costs to pay.
Machine Learning services are growing so fast, that it’s hard to find digital business that does not take advantage from it. Its most common functionality is image/video recognition. That’s why in November 2016 Amazon introduced Rekognition — AWS product for detecting, labeling and categorizing images and videos in the cloud. But is it worth its price? Is there any way to cut down the cost even by 40%?
How Rekognition is priced?
When it comes to photos, the fee is simple: $1.00 for each 1000 photos. When you process more than 1 million photos per month, price per 1k is shrinking — for more information, checkout Rekognition pricing page.
The tricky part is with video. And I’m talking about video files only, not streams. Amazon wants $0,10 for every minute of your content — this price seems tempting, cause that is equal to 100 analized images.
But what if you would have video upload service, where you assured your users that content on your site does not include pornography, guns and any type of white powder? If you were like YouTube in 2017, then you would need to pay in every minute $2400 to Amazon, that’s $3 456 000 every day.
Let’s cut that down to 2 millions, shall we?
