Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) — this headphone technology has been around for a while, but never been so popular at wide consumer market. As a matter of fact, it was popular mostly among frequent flyers, tired of airplane white noise. But that has changed about a year ago, when Apple introduced AirPods Pro — small, true wireless, yet expensive headphones for masses.

Comfort and convenience

Before 2019, ANC was implemented mostly into over-ears headphones, but the clunky, unconvenient form factor wasn’t best fit for the gym, shopping or during the winter time, while wearing woolen hat… or any kind of hat. Of course, there were Sony buds, but come on… it’s Sony — they’ve got riddiculous name (WF-1000XM3) and have you ever seen them advertised?

Today, with people working from home (some with toddler and a dog on their laps) convenience took over everything. Hoodies and sweatpants are on a rise, and so the ANC headphones. People started to cut out their audio surroundings:

  • flatmates and neighbours
  • dishwashers and laundry machines
  • street noises
